Here's the fun half, from someone who threw themselves into it.</p><p><strong>Formal Hall</strong></p><p>Formal Hall is the closest real life gets to Harry Potter: long tables, three courses for around £5, and Latin prayers read by senior professors. There are special ones too, the Christmas formal comes with a choir, and drinking games like "Pennying". It's a lovely, slightly surreal ritual that punctuates the week.</p><p><strong>Balls</strong></p><p>Then there are the balls, proper black-tie or white-tie affairs running from about 8pm to 6am, with performances, food and drinks all night. The grander white-tie ones cost around £180 and come with elaborate dress codes, tail coats included. They're a splurge, but the kind you remember for years.</p><p><strong>Punting</strong></p><p>Punting is a favourite, and not just for students, locals and tourists love it too. You take a group of three to five friends, use a long pole to push a flat boat along the river, and mostly eat, drink and chat while someone occasionally steers into a bank. It's the quintessential Oxford summer afternoon.</p><p><strong>Sport and bops</strong></p><p>There's loads of inter-college sport, the competitions are called "Cuppers", and it's very student-run, so you can throw yourself in even as a complete beginner. I played mixed lacrosse and did some rowing, which meant 6am starts on the river, character-building, let's call it. Back on dry land, college "bops" are themed fancy-dress parties in the college bar every few weeks, with cheap drinks and no pressure at all.</p><p><strong>Work hard, play hard</strong></p><p>The thread running through all of it is balance. The academic side is genuinely intense, and the social and sporting side is what keeps you sane and makes the place feel like a home rather than a library with beds.</p><p><strong>Final thoughts</strong></p><p>If you're worried Oxford will be all work, don't be, the traditions and the friendships are as much a part of it as the tutorials, and they're what most of us remember most fondly.
