How Oxford's Maths and Maths & Statistics degrees compare year by year, where they diverge, and why you can switch between them.
<p>A lot of Oxford maths applicants get stuck on one question, straight Maths or Maths and Statistics, and I did too, until I saw how little separates them early on. Here's how they actually differ.</p><p><strong>First year: identical</strong></p><p>In first year, the two courses are the same. You sit five exams, covering algebra, analysis, probability and statistics and the other core topics, and you complete a computational mathematics project. So you don't have to be certain on day one; your first year deliberately keeps both doors open.</p><p><strong>Second year: a small split</strong></p><p>The difference starts to show in second year. Both courses have three core exams plus optional papers, but Maths and Statistics students must take probability and statistics as compulsory long options. That leaves them with three electives to choose, where a straight Maths student has five. It's a modest narrowing, not a dramatic one.</p><p><strong>Third year: where they diverge</strong></p><p>Third year is where they properly separate. Straight Maths students can pick freely from around thirty-five modules. Maths and Statistics students have to complete certain required statistics modules that pure maths students can't take. So the real question comes down to how much statistics you actively want to be committed to.</p><p><strong>You can switch</strong></p><p>Reassuringly, there's often the chance to switch between the two during your time at Oxford, with your tutor's approval. My honest advice is to use first year to see how much you enjoy the statistics modules, then let that decide for you, rather than agonising over the choice before you've tried either side.</p><p><strong>Final thoughts</strong></p><p>Don't let this decision paralyse you at the application stage. The courses share a first year, and you can move between them, so choose based on genuine interest once you've sampled the material.
