I'm Jake, I'm from Worcestershire in England, and I'm in my second year of my BA French and Linguistics degree at St Catherine's college Oxford.
Learning very much tends to happen through mistakes, and I like to embrace that fully. A healthy dialogue between mentor and student is something I'm always striving for, and I think achieving that through asking questions and encouraging open discussion is the best way to do so. Tutorials at Oxford are very much focused on this kind of discussion rather than didactic teaching and I think that getting students used to that as soon as possible will set them up best for an interview at Oxford.
I have spoken to several people about the process of getting to Oxford in more informal contexts and have helped people out with personal statements and linguistics in general. I am also a part of the Access Oxbridge scheme which provides support and tutoring to less advantaged applicants from the UK, aiding them with the Oxbridge process.
In my free time I enjoy performing improvised comedy with an Oxford based troupe which recently brought a show to the Edinburgh Fringe festival. I enjoy music and in the past have hosted a radio show at the Oxford Student Union station. I volunteer at my local charity shop, and (very occasionally!) like to write.
